The Power of Community is Positive Change

Container Planting = Mini Garden!

There are many ways to grow food. Do not be limited by the idea of living in a shack, flat or small dwelling.

Liesel James from Creating Change has demonstrated this to the Marine Primary Environmental Club who weekly meets on a Friday afternoon learning skills development through natural gardening, healthy eating and environmental sustainable education.

Container planting is so easy and manageable. There are always crates or boxes available if you just really look around you. In our case Blue Water Café kindly donated some extra crates for our class of 38 kids from Ocean View and Masiphumulele.

The kids build up their crates with layers of stones, grass, sand, compost and mulch.  Each child got a variety of 6 plants, which included spinach, spring onions, lettuce, beetroot parsley and marigold to keep the insects away.

They looked after their gardens at school watering with Mr Petersen during break. Now that the plants are well established we have driven most gardens to the individual homes.

Renaldo from Masiphumulele takes his garden in doors when no one is around to look after it as they sometimes experience vandalism and theft.

Spinach can last for a good couple of years if you keep on feeding it with compost, water and love.

We hope that through the kids taking their mini gardens home we can entice other members of the community to start growing food from home.
