The Power of Community is Positive Change

Back Yard Garden at Ons Huisie Retirement Home, Ocean View, Cape Town

Further to the launch of a Power of Community movement in Ocean View earlier this year, Creating Change organized a backyard garden workshop at Ons Huisie Retirement Home in Ocean View on the 18th of November. This is one of 3 workshops sponsored through the DA 61 ward counselor, Simon Liel-Cock.

Change Agent and facilitator Maryna Bosazza taught 20 residents on how to convert a backyard into a lush vegetable garden. This hand on workshop assisted and expanded the existing vegetable garden managed by Lilly Lawrence’s (a resident at Ons Huisie) to feed the residents at Ons Huisie chemically free and nutritional food.

“Many hands make light work is a perfect example of the Power of Community”, says Liesel James from Creating Change,” not only did we clear, convert and expand a small vegetable garden to a lush garden full of biodiversity, but we also implemented a compost heap for the next planting season and created a recreational area for the elderly to enjoy the tranquility of the garden under a tree.”

Land to cultivate is what is needed in Ocean View as many keen gardeners live in council flats and don’t have access to land.

Thanks to Chloe, Luke, Glenn, Joey and Jordan for volunteering.
