Planting trees for Abor and launching AfriTwin Project at Marine Primary School, Ocean View.

STOCKHOLM, 27 September - Human influence on the climate system is clear. This is evident in most regions of the globe, a new assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes.

With this in mind, Creating Change launched the 18 month project for Marine Primary School’s AfriTwin project with the learners involved and delegates from Global Carbon Exchange, Spur Corporate and Alive2Green. The first project is to plant a small forest at the school in Ocean View. The aim is to implement a vegetable garden amongst the trees in 2014.

AfriTwin project was started by the British Consulate encourages mutual beneficial relationships between schools in the UK, South Africa and in this Marine Primary’s case also including Zimbabwe by sharing projects and reciprocal exchanges between teachers and students.

The Principal, Mr. Lawrence said this project ties in with the school’s theme of RESPECT, which was introduced earlier this year.

Earl Cloete from Spur and ex scholar at Marine Primary was very excited about the positive environmental initiatives at school. Earl a role model and soccer coach after-hours, interacted with the kids and left a message behind of it doesn’t matter where you come from, but what matters is who you choose to be.

Kevin James, weekly Radio 2000 guest on Ernst Pillay drive time show talking Climate Change and Sustainability, was a guest speaker on Friday and complimented the principal on how the school has maintained momentum with their environmental initiatives.

The event was a positive kick start and everyone involved enjoyed participating.

Mr Daniels project leader of AfriTwin project pledges their commitment to care after the trees.

The learners will be meeting on Thursday afternoons during the school calendar year.

A special thanks to our sponsors who sponsored a total of 34 trees: Just Trees, GCX Africa, Spur Corporate, Alive2Green, Incite Sustainability, Cape Villa Collection, Coza Productions, Cathy Ririe, Carmen Lorraine Photography, Pieter and Joey van Niekerk, Free Range Café and Creating Change
