In Spirit of the Whales - 7 June 2009

In Spirit of the whales, by Liesel James 15 June 2009

Little Green Fingers, a children’s environmental group, joined the Noordhoek Conservancy in their tree planting event on Sunday 7 June. Due to the tragic death of the whales on 30 May, Little Green Fingers dedicated their trees in honor of the whales.

The morning of June started off with a light drizzle but cleared to be a beautiful colorful day with a great turnout of adults and children alike. Everyone arrived with a spade and we positioned the trees according to their different needs.

Four of LGF members were helping in the water on the day and 2 (children 6 and 10) were exposed to the whales being shot in front of them; one was only a baby whale.

The clear fresh air and bright sun warmed our hearts again and we planted the trees with love and care.
The trees will grow big and strong. Next time you walk down the common, notice the young trees on the bottom on the eastern side.

Special thanksto Bridgette O’Donaghue from the Conservancy and Beau Horgon from NEAG who organized this event. Then thanks to the City of Cape Town for the trees donated and Carmen Lorraine Jennings for capturing the moment.

Pictures published - go to photos and then all albums to view pictures.

Dear Liesel On behalf of my grandsons Tristan & Liam Bernstein I want to thank you for affording them ( in fact the whole family ) the opportunity to bring closure to the appalling debacle the previous Sat.. The whole family were involved in helping the whales but were severely traumatised by the brutish way the euthanasia was carried out without ample warning to get the children off the beach - the sound of the shooting will live with me forever. The boys were able to remember the whales by naming the trees planted & we will continue by caring for the trees. What a wonderful idea - the love they were feeling for the whales will live on for years in the trees - thanks again Jenny Geater Julie Geater Jens Bernstein Mike Armstrong & the boys
