Dear Green Friends,
September was Arbor month and also the 25th Annual Coastal Clean Up. It was wonderful to register our project in Kalk Bay on www.oceanconservancy.org and am encouraged to see how many more projects were registered in and around Cape Town compared with last year.
I haven't had feedback from the other organizers but I am sure a lot of rubbish was collected everywhere. In Kalk Bay the Shark Institute cleaned…

On Saturday 26 June2010 we met on Fish Hoek Beach between 11 and 12 to hold hands across the sand which was an international event - Joining Hands across the Sand.
We registered our event very late but as my family and I were going to do this any how, we invited everyone we knew knowing if they couldn't make it, at least they would be aware of it and put intentions out there where ever they might be.
Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life…

In September last year I met Bridget Doyle - an Earth Angel of Riebeek Kasteel - on one of my Permaculture Food Gardens through Food and Trees for Africa. We are currently working together on a community garden in Riebeek West sponsored by PPC Cement.
Bridget started a soup kitchen in 2000 as there is 80 % unemployment in the Kasteel valley. She had children and adults knocking on her door for food on daily basis. This transpired into her getting some land on lease and starting a…

Doyou have any questions regarding the mass shooting of beached whales in Kommetjie and Noordhoek on the 30th of May 2009?
1."Mass euthanasie of whales is a RARE occurrence" and is only used as a last resort when whales strand themselves on relatively remote beaches. IWC58: Welfare on whale killing methods and associated welfare issues;euthanasia of stranded ceteceans in New Zealand.

Little Green Fingers and Fish Hoek Nippers had a fantastic turnout of 66 children even though it was raining and a long weekend. It is great to know that there are so many Eco Warriors out there. Golden River Spur Manager Sean handed out T-shirts with both Eco Warrior and LGF logos on it.
These nature warriors put their t-shirts on, grabbed bags and headed for the beach, dunes and streets in the stormy weather.
The feedback from the public was very positive. Many…

In Spirit of the whales, by Liesel James 15 June 2009
Little Green Fingers, a children’s environmental group, joined the Noordhoek Conservancy in their tree planting event on Sunday 7 June. Due to the tragic death of the whales on 30 May, Little Green Fingers dedicated their trees in honor of the whales.
The morning of June started off with a light drizzle but cleared to be a beautiful colorful day with a great turnout of adults and children alike. Everyone arrived…

Dear Little Friends,
We are feeling very sad about the whales that lost their way and beached on the beach Saturday, 30 May 2009. Civilians were great in helping and I am so grateful for every one's contribution in and out of the water yesterday. As our mission as nature protectors we must insist on a Plan of Action because there is a very good chance it is going to happen again. There were possibilities yesterday, but resources and lack of experience in SA was a problem. The…
